Emotional Wellbeing
The National Center for Emotional Wellness (NCEW) describes emotional wellness or wellbeing as an awareness, understanding, and acceptance of feelings and an ability to manage effectively through times of change or challenge. Uncomfortable or painful emotions and overwhelming thoughts can affect how well individuals function and may make people feel they are losing control of their lives. According to the NCEW, "gaining awareness of the emotions each person feels and how to process them, "people can regain a feeling of control, minimize difficulties, and continue to function healthily."
Emotional wellbeing can affect how well someone can function day to day or how they are able to handle change or uncertainty, especially in the workplace or school setting. Difficulties in emotional wellbeing may have a negative effect on a person’s mental and physical health.
Physical Wellbeing
According to the University of Georgia, physical wellbeing is practicing self-care for the needs of your body. This includes physical activity, balanced nutrition, getting adequate sleep, and avoiding harmful behaviors. Physical wellbeing is also the ability to maintain a healthy quality of life that allows us to get the most out of our daily activities without undue fatigue or physical stress.
Financial Wellbeing
Have you ever asked yourself the questions, "Am I prepared for retirement?" or "How do I stop living paycheck to paycheck?" These questions are both related to your Financial Wellbeing. According to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), "Financial well-being means how much your financial situation and money choices provide you with security and freedom of choice." You can achieve a financial wellbeing by taking actions to postive actions to improve your financial situation—on your own or with help from others, maybe through a friend, coach, book, or financial services professional.
Spiritual Wellbeing
Spiritual wellbeing is often misunderstood as being associated with a particular religious or spiritual practice or ideology. The Spiritual wellbeing concept is a very diverse and often a personal aspect of total wellbeing and health. Spiritual wellbeing allows us to connect self to others and environments around us, including our work or school environments, while finding and maintaining a purpose and meaning to our lives. This can be achieved without necessarily engaging with spiritual or religious practices and communities. However, spirtual or religious practices and communities can play an important role on an individual basis.
